# Apply a template

> Use a saved template to style a new QR code, an existing one, or a whole bulk batch.

Applying a template copies its design (colors, frame and logo) onto a QR code. The code's type and content stay as they are.

## Before you start

* You need the **Admin** or **Editor** role. Viewers can't apply templates.
* Your workspace needs at least one template. See [Save a template](/templates/save-template).

## Start a new QR code from a template

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open QR Templates">
    Click **QR Templates** in the sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the template menu">
    Click the three-dot menu on the template card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the QR code">
    Click **New QR from template**. The QR code builder opens with the template's design already set.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the content">
    Choose the QR code type and fill in the content, as for any new code. See [Create your first QR code](/getting-started/first-qr-code).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    On the **Customize & Download** step, check the preview and click **Create QR**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Apply a template in the QR code builder

Use this when you're already building a code, or to restyle an existing one.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the design step">
    For a new code, go to the **Customize & Download** step. For an existing code, open its menu on **My QR Codes** and click **Customize QR**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open My templates">
    Click the **My templates** tab above the design options.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a template">
    Click a template. You see "Template applied" and the preview updates.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Adjust if needed">
    To tweak the design, switch back to **Custom designs** and make changes. The template itself stays unchanged.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Create QR** for a new code, or **Save changes** for an existing one.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Changing the design of an existing code doesn't change where it points. Copies you already printed keep scanning, but they still show the old design.
</Note>

## Apply a template to a bulk batch

In **Create Bulk**, the **Customize** step has the same **My templates** tab. The template you pick is applied to every QR code in the batch. See [Create QR codes from a CSV](/bulk/create-from-csv).

## Use cases

* **Fast on-brand codes.** Start every new code from your brand template.
* **Rebrand.** Restyle existing codes with a new template without reprinting the links.
* **Event batches.** Apply one template to a whole bulk batch of event or table codes.

## Common issues

  <Accordion title="The My templates tab is greyed out">
    Your workspace has no templates yet. Create one first, see [Save a template](/templates/save-template).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I don't see New QR from template or the template menu">
    Your role is Viewer. Viewers can view templates but can't apply, edit or delete them.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I edited a template but my QR codes didn't change">
    This is expected. Each QR code keeps its own copy of the design. To update a code, apply the template to it again and click **Save changes**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="A Branded design or AI design template takes a moment to apply">
    These designs are re-rendered for each QR code's own link, so applying one can take a few seconds. Wait until the preview updates before you save.
