# QR code types

> Choose the right QR code type for what you want people to open.

The QR code type decides what happens when someone scans your code: open a website, show a PDF, start a WhatsApp chat, join a WiFi network and more. GetQR has 15 types, and you pick one in the first step of the QR code builder.

## All types

| Type | What it does | Guide |
| - | - | - |
| **Website** | Opens a website or landing page. | [Website](/qr-types/website) |
| **PDF** | Opens one PDF, or a page with up to 10 PDFs. | [PDF](/qr-types/pdf) |
| **WhatsApp** | Starts a WhatsApp chat with your number, with an optional pre-typed message. | [WhatsApp](/qr-types/whatsapp) |
| **Image** | Shows one image, or a gallery of up to 10 images. | [Image](/qr-types/image) |
| **vCard** | Shares a digital business card that people can save to their contacts. | [vCard](/qr-types/vcard) |
| **Social Media** | Shows a page with all your social media profiles. | [Social Media](/qr-types/social) |
| **WiFi** | Connects the phone to your WiFi network. | [WiFi](/qr-types/wifi) |
| **Video** | Plays a video file you upload. | [Video](/qr-types/video) |
| **Location** | Opens a location in Google Maps. | [Location](/qr-types/location) |
| **Email** | Opens a pre-filled email to your address. | [Email](/qr-types/email) |
| **Feedback** | Opens your survey, review page or feedback form. | [Feedback](/qr-types/feedback) |
| **App Link** | Sends iPhone users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play. | [App Link](/qr-types/app-link) |
| **Multi-Link** | Shows a page with several links and social profiles. | [Multi-Link](/qr-types/multi-link) |

The types appear in this order in the builder. **Website** is marked **Most used**.

## How to choose

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Send people to a link" icon="link">
    Use [Website](/qr-types/website) for one page. Use [Multi-Link](/qr-types/multi-link) or [Social Media](/qr-types/social) for several links. Use [Feedback](/qr-types/feedback), [Payment](/qr-types/payment) or [App Link](/qr-types/app-link) when the link has that specific purpose.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Share a file" icon="file">
    Use [PDF](/qr-types/pdf) for documents, [Image](/qr-types/image) for photos and galleries, and [Video](/qr-types/video) for a video file. You upload the file to GetQR, so you don't need to host it.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Start a conversation" icon="message">
    Use [WhatsApp](/qr-types/whatsapp), [SMS](/qr-types/sms) or [Email](/qr-types/email). People scan and the message is ready to send.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Share details" icon="address-card">
    Use [vCard](/qr-types/vcard) for contact details, [Location](/qr-types/location) for an address and [WiFi](/qr-types/wifi) for network access.
  </Card>

## Dynamic and static codes

Every type except **WiFi** is a dynamic QR code. The code holds a GetQR short link, not your content. That means you can:

* change the content after you print the code, and the printed code keeps working,
* see scans in [analytics](/analytics/overview),
* protect the code with a password.

A **WiFi** QR code holds the network details in the code itself, so a phone can join without opening a browser. Scans aren't tracked, and if you change the WiFi details, the pattern changes and you need to reprint the code. See [WiFi QR code](/qr-types/wifi).

## Change the type later

You can change the type of a QR code after you create it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your QR codes">
    Click **My QR Codes** in the sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the QR code menu">
    Find the QR code and open its menu.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change the type">
    Click **Change QR Type**. The builder opens on the type step.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a new type">
    Click the new type. The content form for that type opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the new content">
    Fill in the form, then click **Next**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save changes**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Switching to or from **WiFi** changes the QR code pattern, so codes you already printed stop matching. Switching between other types keeps the same short link, so printed codes keep working.
</Warning>

## Common issues

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I can't find the type I need">
    Pick the closest link-based type. Most needs fit **Website** (any URL) or **Multi-Link** (several links on one page).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My form was cleared when I went back and picked another type">
    Changing the type in the builder clears the content you entered for the previous type. Only the QR code name is kept.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My WiFi QR code shows no scans">
    WiFi codes connect the phone directly to the network and never pass through GetQR, so scans can't be counted.
  </Accordion>
