# Formats and resolution

> Download a QR code as JPEG, PNG, SVG, PDF or EPS, and choose the right file and size for each use.

GetQR downloads QR codes in five formats, and raster formats in three sizes. Pick the format by where the code will end up: screen, office printer or professional print.

## Before you start

* Every role can download QR codes, including Viewer.
* Downloading doesn't change the code. Download it as many times and in as many formats as you need.

## Download a QR code

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open My QR Codes">
    Click **My QR Codes** in the sidebar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the download window">
    On the QR code, open its menu and click **Download QR**. The **QR Code Preview** window opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a format">
    Click the format selector (it shows **JPEG** by default) and pick a format.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a size">
    For JPEG, PNG and EPS, pick **1024 × 1024**, **2048 × 2048** or **4096 × 4096**. SVG has no size, and PDF is always **A4**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Download">
    Click **Download QR**. The file is saved to your browser's downloads folder.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Right after you create a QR code, the **Your QR is ready!** window opens with the same options, so you can download it straight away.
</Tip>

## Which format to use

| Format | In the app | Background | Size options | Best for |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| **JPEG** (default) | JPEG - Easy share (solid background) | White | 1024, 2048, 4096 px | Email, chat, social posts, documents |
| **PNG** | PNG - Best quality (transparent background) | Transparent | 1024, 2048, 4096 px | Websites, slides, placing on colored designs |
| **SVG** | SVG - Print & edit (transparent background) | Transparent | None (vector, scales to any size) | Print, design tools (Illustrator, Figma, Inkscape) |
| **PDF** | PDF - Universal format | White | A4 page | Printing at the office, sending to a print shop |
| **EPS** | EPS - High quality print files | White | 1024, 2048, 4096 px | Print workflows that require EPS files |

### Notes on each format

* **SVG** is a vector file: it stays sharp at any size, from a business card to a banner.
* **PDF** puts the code on an A4 page, 190 mm wide, centered with a 10 mm margin. For standard designs, the code is vector, so you can also scale it in print software.
* **EPS** contains an image at the size you pick, not vector shapes. Choose 4096 px for large prints, or use SVG or PDF when you need true vector.
* **PNG and SVG** have a transparent background. On a dark screen they can look wrong; view them on a light background.

## Which size to use

| Size | Use it for |
| - | - |
| 1024 × 1024 | Screens, email, messaging, small prints such as flyers and table cards |
| 2048 × 2048 | Posters and larger print when you can't use SVG or PDF |
| 4096 × 4096 | Very large print from a raster file, such as banners |

For anything printed, prefer SVG or PDF. See [Print your QR code](/downloads/printing).

## Branded designs and AI designs

Codes made with **Branded designs** or **AI designs** are images, so they have fewer download options:

* Formats: **JPEG**, **PNG** or **PDF**. SVG and EPS are not available.
* Size: **1024 × 1024** only for JPEG and PNG.
* PDF: an A4 page with a high-resolution image of the code.

## File names

Downloads are named after the QR code. Raster files include the size, for example `spring-menu-2048px.png`. SVG and PDF files don't, for example `spring-menu.svg`.

  <Accordion title=""Failed to download QR code"">
    The download didn't complete. Close the window, open **Download QR** again and retry. If it keeps failing, try another format, then contact [help@getqr.com](mailto:help@getqr.com).

  <Accordion title="I can't change the size">
    SVG has no size, PDF is always A4, and Branded or AI designs download at 1024 px only.

  <Accordion title="A message says the domain isn't live yet">
    The code uses a custom domain that hasn't finished DNS setup, so anything you print now won't scan. GetQR blocks the download until the domain is live. Finish the setup first, see [Verify and troubleshoot a domain](/custom-domains/verify-and-troubleshoot).
