# Design overview

> Where QR code design lives in the builder, the three design styles, and what you can change after printing.

You design a QR code in the last step of the builder, **Customize & Download**. Pick one of three design styles, shape the look, and you can come back to change the design at any time.

## Before you start

* You need the Admin or Editor role. Viewers can't create or customize QR codes. See [Roles and permissions](/members/roles-and-permissions).
* Add the content of your QR code first. See [Create your first QR code](/getting-started/first-qr-code).

## Open the design step

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a QR code">
    Click **Create QR** in the sidebar, then complete **Choose QR type** and **Create content**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go to the design step">
    Click **Next**. The builder opens **Customize & Download** on the **Custom designs** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a design style">
    Click **Custom designs**, **Branded designs** or **AI designs**. The preview updates as you change settings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the QR code">
    Click **Create QR**. To download it, see [Formats and resolution](/downloads/formats-and-resolution).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The three design styles

| Style | What you get | Best for |
| - | - | - |
| **Custom designs** | A classic QR code you style from presets: frame, colors, dot and corner shapes, and a logo in the center. | Most print and everyday uses. Downloads in every format and size. |
| **Branded designs** | Upload a logo or image and GetQR rebuilds it as a working, scannable QR code. | Making the code itself look like your brand mark. |
| **AI designs** | Describe a picture and AI draws original artwork around your code. | Eye-catching, one-of-a-kind codes for campaigns. |

A fourth tab, **My templates**, applies a design you saved earlier. It is greyed out until you save your first template. See [Save a template](/templates/save-template).

<Note>
  Branded and AI designs are images, so they download as JPG or PNG at 1024 px, or as PDF. SVG, EPS and larger sizes are only available for **Custom designs**. See [Formats and resolution](/downloads/formats-and-resolution).
</Note>

## What's on the Custom designs tab

The **Custom designs** tab splits settings into chips:

| Chip | What you change |
| - | - |
| **Frame** | A frame around the code, with a short caption and color presets. See [Frames](/design/frames). |
| **Customization** | **QR shape**, **Corner Square shape**, **Corner Dot shape**, **QR Color**, and the frame caption and colors. See [Colors](/design/colors). |
| **Logo** | Upload your logo or pick an icon, and scale it. See [Add a logo](/design/logo). |
| **Password** | Ask for a password before the content opens. See [Custom QR codes](/design/custom-qr). |
| **Schedule** | Set when the code activates, pauses, or stops after a number of scans. See [Custom QR codes](/design/custom-qr). |

## Change the design later

Because GetQR QR codes point to a short link, you can restyle a code, or change where it leads, without breaking codes you already printed.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find the QR code">
    Open your dashboard and find the QR code in the list.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the design step">
    Open the QR code's actions and click **Customize QR**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save your changes">
    Change the design, then click **Save changes**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  A new design changes how the code looks, not where it points. Codes you already printed keep the old look. Reprint them if the new look matters.
</Warning>
