# Colors

> Change the color of your QR code, its frame and its caption.

Match your QR code to your brand by changing the color of the code, the frame and the caption. Pick a ready-made color preset or set each color yourself.

## Before you start

* These settings are on the **Custom designs** tab. For Branded designs, see [Branded QR codes](/design/branded-qr).

## Change the QR code color

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the design step">
    In the builder, go to **Customize & Download** and stay on **Custom designs**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open Customization">
    Click the **Customization** chip.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the color picker">
    Click the **QR Color** field.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a color">
    Choose a swatch on **Palette**, drag on **Solid**, or type a hex code such as `#003323` into the field.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  If your browser supports it, the popover shows an eyedropper button. Use it to pick a color from anywhere on your screen, such as your logo.
</Tip>

To go back to black, click the reset button (circular arrow) next to the field. It appears once the color differs from the default.

## Use a color preset

Frames come with color presets that set the QR code, frame and caption colors together.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Frame">
    Click the **Frame** chip.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a frame">
    Pick a frame under **Frame around the QR code**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a preset">
    Pick a swatch group under **Color presets**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

You can still fine-tune each color on the **Customization** chip after you pick a preset.

## Settings

| Setting | Where | What it does |
| - | - | - |
| **QR Color** | **Customization** | Color of the dots and corners of the code. Default black. |
| **Frame color** | **Customization**, when a frame is selected | Color of the frame around the code. |
| **Text Color** | **Customization**, when a frame is selected | Color of the frame caption. |
| **Color presets** | **Frame**, for frames that have presets | Sets the QR, frame and caption colors in one click. |

<Note>
  The builder uses solid colors. The background of a Custom design is white. See [Backgrounds](/design/backgrounds).
</Note>

## Tips for scannable colors

* Keep the code dark and the background light. Phone cameras read dark-on-light codes most reliably.
* Keep strong contrast. Light grey, yellow or pastel codes on white can fail to scan.
* Make the caption readable against the frame: don't use the same color for **Text Color** and **Frame color**.
* Test with a few phones before you print.

## Common issues

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I can't set the QR color to white">
    White isn't allowed for **QR Color**, because a white code on the white background can't be scanned. Pick a dark color instead.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The hex code turns red">
    The value isn't a valid hex color. Use the `#RRGGBB` format, for example `#0035cc`.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I don't see Frame color or Text Color">
    These fields only appear when a frame is selected. Choose a frame on the **Frame** chip first.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="I don't see Color presets">
    Not every frame has presets, and the no-frame option has none. Pick another frame.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The code doesn't scan after I changed the color">
    The contrast is probably too low. Choose a darker **QR Color** and test again.
  </Accordion>
